Plain talk about common digestive problems
I recently retired after spending a 31 year career in clinical gastroenterology in a variety of settings- mostly private practice, but also time in academia and lastly with the Veteran’s Administration.
This diversified experience has taught me how to listen to people, and also how to explain medical concepts in simple, understandable terms. When I search the web for GI problems like irritable bowel syndrome or gastroesophageal reflux, I find a lot of formal websites from outstanding institutions.
These sites all have great information, but no one to really explain it “like it is”. The stuff can be downright confusing. Now, I don’t want to create a “GI for Dummies”, ‘cause you ain’t no dummies. But I can be your guy, your GI guy.
I do want to make it clear that I am a traditionally trained, board certified gastroenterologist who believes in evidence based medicine. You will not find holistic or anecdotal (unproven) remedies here. Not to dismiss all complimentary or alternative medical treatments, if they can pass the mustard of rigorous scientific review. Some can, for example peppermint oil for irritable bowel syndrome. And some can’t.
I’m really more about explaining the formal and rigid jargon that comes out of doctors’ mouths. Hope you check me out next time.
